UK Travel Guide: Derbyshire & North England Filming Locations from the 1995 Pride & Prejudice BBC Series.

The 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is one of our favourite book to screen adaptations and is one of the most beloved interpretations of Jane Austen’s classic novel. But did you know that many of the most iconic scenes were filmed in Derbyshire and its surrounding counties? From Mr Darcy’s grand estate of Pemberley to Elizabeth Bennet’s windswept walks in the Peak District, you can visit all the North's Pride and Prejudice filming locations over a weekend trip.
In this guide, we’ll take you through the real-life filming spots used in the 1995 series, sharing the exact locations, visitor information and practical tips. We’ve also included a handy map at the end of the post to help you plan your own Pride and Prejudice inspired road trip. So grab your bonnet and your walking boots and let's explore!
Lyme Park, Cheshire – Pemberley (Exterior)
Location: Lyme Park, Disley, Cheshire
Featured In: Episodes 3 & 4
Let’s start with the most iconic filming location of all - Pemberley. The exterior shots of Mr Darcy's grand estate, including the house, inner courtyard, lake, gardens and grand entrance, were filmed at Lyme Park, just outside the Derbyshire border in Cheshire.
Fans will immediately recognise the famous scene where Mr Darcy emerges from the lake, as well as the awkward meeting that follows between a soaked Darcy and Elizabeth in the gardens. If you can only visit one of the locations on this list, make it this one!
Other scenes filmed at Lyme Park include:
Elizabeth’s visit to Pemberley with the Gardiners.
Mr Darcy’s invitation in the gardens for Elizabeth to meet his sister.
The closing shot of Episode 4 as Darcy watches Elizabeth’s carriage leave.
Note: Whilst the exterior scenes of Pemberley were filmed at Lyme, the interior scenes were not. But don’t worry, we’ll be covering those in our next location.
Visitor Information:
Location: Lyme, Disley, Stockport SK12 2NR
Opening Hours: Open year-round, but check website for seasonal opening hours
Entry Fee: Between £8 - £17 per adult (free for National Trust members)

Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire – Pemberley (Interior)
Location: Sudbury, Derbyshire
Featured In: Episodes 4 & 5
The richly decorated interiors of Pemberley were filmed at Sudbury Hall, a beautiful 17th century house also managed by the National Trust. Elizabeth first sees the inside of Pemberley during a tour with the Gardiners and again later when she sings for Mr Darcy and his guests in Episode 5.
Look out for:
The yellow staircase, where Aunt Gardiner and Elizabeth discuss the miniatures of Mr Darcy and Mr Wickham.
The portrait gallery, where Elizabeth lingers in front of Mr Darcy’s painting.
The study and the hallway which appear in flashbacks to Darcy and Wickham’s shared past. These scenes appear during Elizabeth’s reading of Darcy’s letter at the beginning of Episode 4.
Mr Darcy’s bedroom is recognisable by its red wallpaper and large fireplace. This is where he prepares to meet Elizabeth just before she receives news from Longbourn.
Visitor Information:
Location: Sudbury Hall, Sudbury, Ashbourne DE6 5HT
Opening Hours: Check the website for seasonal hours
Entry Fee: £22 per adult (free for National Trust members)
Parking: Free parking in National Trust car park, 500 yards down main road
Extras: The National Trust Museum of Childhood is included in your ticket and worth a look while you're here.

Ramshaw Rocks – Elizabeth’s First Look at Derbyshire
Location: Leek, Staffordshire
Featured In: Episodes 4 & 5
Ramshaw Rocks boasts one of the most dramatic landscapes featured in the series. It’s here that Elizabeth and the Gardiners pause to take in the "untamed beauty of the peaks". These rocks also feature in the opening shot of Episode 5. Located on the Staffordshire-Derbyshire border, this spot is ideal for hiking and offers stunning open views of the surrounding countryside.
Visitor Information:
Location: Ramshaw Rocks, Leek ST13 8UG (just off A53)
Parking: Limited roadside parking
Footwear: Good walking boots recommended as there is no set path and the ground is rocky and uneven
Accessibility: Not suitable for those with limited mobility

Longnor - The Inn at Lambton (Exterior)
Location: Longnor, Derbyshire
Featured In: Episodes 4 & 5
The quaint village of Longnor served as the exterior filming location for the Inn at Lambton, where Elizabeth and the Gardiners stay during their Derbyshire visit. The building used in the series still bears a traditional hanging sign, making it easy to identify for fans. Although it appears only briefly on screen, it’s well worth a visit and is just a 10 minute drive from Ramshaw Rocks.
Note: This location is a quiet, residential street, so please be considerate when visiting this spot.
Visitor Information:
Location: Church St, Longnor, Buxton SK17 0NT
Parking: Free village parking nearby
Ice Cream: Visit the nearby Tagg Lane Dairy (10 mins drive) for the best ice cream in the UK (trust us!)

Bonus Location: Belton Estate - Rosings Park
Location: Belton, Lincolnshire
Featured In: Episodes 3 & 4
We've included the Belton Estate as a bonus location as it's located further away from the other filming spots in this guide. But if you're visiting the North of England, and don't mind the drive out, we'd highly recommend adding this to your list.
Belton stands in for Rosings Park, the residence of Mr Darcy's formidable aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. It's featured in scenes where Elizabeth visits her friend Charlotte and endures several dinners at Rosings. Also managed by the National Trust, Belton is a large estate which was used for both interior and exterior filming and is around a 90 minute drive from Sudbury Hall.
Other scenes filmed at Belton include:
Darcy and Elizabeth share a moment at the piano in the elegant music room.
Mr Darcy runs up the noticeable staircase after his proposal to Elizabeth is rejected in Episode 4.
Mr Darcy writes a letter to Elizabeth in his room after she turns down his proposal.
Visitor Information:
Location: Belton Estate, Grantham, Lincolnshire, NG32 2LS
Opening Hours: Vary seasonally, check the website before visiting
Entry Fee: £17 - £22 per adult (free for National Trust members)
Parking: Parking is included in your ticket
