🎟️ The Essentials: Don’t Leave Home Without These
Before you think about earplugs or waterproofs, make sure you’ve packed the essentials. These are the must-haves that will get you through Silverstone's gates and avoid any issues on race weekend:
Tickets. This may sound obvious, but double-check you’ve got your tickets. Silverstone operates on a paperless ticket system, so make sure you've downloaded your digital tickets onto the Silverstone app before you arrive and that they are ready to scan.
Photo ID. We recommend bringing photo ID if you plan on purchasing alcohol and it's helpful if you run into any issues with your booking and need to verify your identity at the gate.
Cash & Card. Vendors at Silverstone accept cards, but signal can be patchy in some areas. Carry a small amount of cash to ensure you won’t miss out if the card readers go down.
🌦️ Prepare for All Weather Conditions
We can't compile a packing list for the British GP without talking about the weather. The weather is famously unpredictable in the UK and Silverstone is no exception. After a few years attending the British GP, we've come to learn that being prepared for all weather conditions can make a big difference in your comfort and enjoyment throughout the weekend, so don't forget these important items:
Waterproof Jacket or Poncho. Even if the forecast looks promising, the weather at Silverstone can change quickly, so it's handy to have a packable waterproof jacket or poncho just in case.
Umbrella. If rain is forecast, add a compact umbrella to your bag. While not necessarily practical for the windy grandstands, an umbrella is useful for getting around the circuit between sessions.
Layers. If you're in one of Silverstone’s covered grandstands, our top tip is to layer up. The wind can really whip through these stands, making it feel a lot colder than you might expect. While it’s perfect for cooling off during a heatwave, it can get pretty chilly on cooler days. A few extra layers such as jumpers, jackets and even scarves and gloves can make a big difference when you’re watching the action from these stands.
Sun Cream & Sunglasses. When the sun shines at Silverstone, it’s strong and there’s very little shade around the circuit. A high-SPF sun cream is essential and a good pair of sunglasses will make watching the action much more comfortable.
Handheld Fan. With temperatures reaching over 30°C at last year’s British GP, our portable USB fans were a great way to stay comfortable during the hotter parts of the day.
Cap or Hat. A cap is a simple way to protect yourself from the sun while showing support for your favourite rider or team, so be sure to check out the merchandise locations and pick one up. We’ve noticed bucket hats becoming more popular with fans year after year, making them a fun alternative if that is more your style.
Comfortable, Sturdy Footwear. If you're planning on exploring different areas of the circuit including the fan zones and other off track entertainment, make sure to wear comfortable, sturdy footwear. You'll likely be doing a lot of steps and walking across uneven gravel, grass and possibly muddy fields. If it's forecast rain, we like to wear water resistant hiking trainers.
Extra Clothes. If you are travelling by car, it’s worth packing a spare set of dry socks and shoes, along with an extra hoodie and a larger umbrella in case conditions turn wet or colder than anticipated.
🍴 Food & Drink
Silverstone allows you to bring in food and non-alcoholic beverages, which is a great way to stay hydrated and keep expenses down throughout the weekend.
Reusable Water Bottle. There are numerous refill stations around the circuit, typically near toilet facilities. A reusable bottle will help you stay hydrated throughout the day. Note: Glass bottles and containers are not permitted at the circuit.
Packed Snacks or Lunch. While there are plenty of food stalls at Silverstone, queues can be long and prices can add up, especially if you're visiting for the whole weekend. We like to pack a few snacks and sandwiches to keep us going between sessions.
Note on Alcohol: Unfortunately, Silverstone has updated their rule on alcohol this year and you'll no longer be allowed to bring your own alcohol to the circuit. However, there are plenty of licensed bars and vendors available on site.
Tip: A soft cooler or insulated lunch bag is useful for keeping food fresh, especially on warmer days.
🎒 Comfort & Extra Items
While these items aren't essential, they have become staples in our packing list over the years and have made our race weekends more comfortable and enjoyable. Consider bringing these items to improve your experience:
Small Backpack. Choose something small but with enough space for your layers, water, snacks and essentials. We recommend one that's water resistant incase of unexpected rain.
Foldable Camping Chairs or Blanket. Camping chairs are allowed at the circuit and are a good option in general admission viewing areas that are not seated, such as Luffield. Camping chairs or picnic blankets are also great for watching any of the main stage events such as rider interviews or the two wheels for life charity auctions and for waiting for the evening music acts to begin.
Power Bank / Portable Charger. Between taking plenty of photos and videos, checking session schedules and sharing your experience on social media, your phone battery will take a hit. We always pack a couple of power banks and cables to keep our phones and portable fans charged throughout the day.
Ear Protection. The bikes are incredibly loud, especially when sitting in one of the covered grandstands. Foam earplugs will do in a pinch, but we'd recommend noise cancelling headphones for a more comfortable experience, especially for children, those with sensitive hearing or if you're sitting in a covered grandstand.
Binoculars. Super useful if you’re in an area further from the action, such as Maggotts or Becketts or to see details on the screens. We also like to use them when sitting in the Hamilton Straight grandstands to see into pit lane and the garages.
Portable Radio & Headphones. While the commentary is broadcast over the loudspeakers, the noise from the bikes can make it hard to hear clearly, so a handheld FM radio and a good pair of headphones is an excellent way to follow race commentary. Radios are available to buy at the track, but we prefer bringing our own smaller, more affordable radio. Note: We have found that the mobile radio feature on our phones doesn’t typically work at Silverstone, so a portable radio ensures you stay connected to what's happening on track.
Team Merchandise. Represent your favourite riders and teams by bringing your merchandise, flags and banners. Whether you’re backing Marquez, Bagnaia or Quartararo or still waving the yellow flag for Rossi, joining in adds to the fun and is a great way to connect with other fans. Tip: Bring your merch to the rider meet and greets to get them signed. We have done this with a few of our caps and pictures and they make great souvenirs from the weekend.
We hope you found our packing list useful. Did we miss anything? Drop us a comment and share your Silverstone essentials. See you at the track!
